Guests feel the difference between a hotel bed and a home bed the moment they lie down. Thread count is one of the reasons why — but it’s the most misunderstood number on the label. Here’s what it really means, in plain terms.
Thread count is simply the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — counting both the threads that run lengthwise (warp) and the threads that run crosswise (weft).
More threads packed into that square inch generally means a tighter, denser weave — which affects how smooth, durable and breathable the sheet feels.
But thread count alone doesn’t decide quality. Cotton type, yarn thickness and finishing matter just as much — which is why the right count depends on the room, not just the number.
One square inch, two directions
Picture a one-inch square of fabric. Count every vertical thread (warp) and every horizontal thread (weft) crossing through it, add them together — that total is the thread count. A 300TC sheet has roughly 300 of these threads woven into that single square inch; a 400TC sheet has closer to 400, woven finer and tighter.
200TC vs. 300TC vs. 400TC
A crisp, light, breathable weave with an open lattice you can feel and see. This is the workhorse count used across most hotel programs — durable through heavy commercial laundering.
The weave tightens noticeably — threads sit closer together for a smoother touch and a subtle, silky sheen. The most common upgrade point in hospitality for a visibly more premium bed.
A dense, fine weave that reads as heavier and softer in the hand, with a richer drape and sheen. Reserved for flagship rooms and turndown-service properties where touch is part of the experience.
Higher thread count doesn’t automatically mean better sheets.
Past roughly 400–500TC, manufacturers often twist multiple thin threads together and count each strand separately to inflate the number — the fabric doesn’t actually get finer. The fibre matters as much as the count: a well-made 300TC long-staple cotton sheet can outlast and outperform a cheaply woven 600TC sheet. For hospitality, the right question isn’t “how high can we go” — it’s matching the count to the room tier, the climate, and how hard housekeeping needs it to work.
